Write down what is not working
Look at your routines for a week. Where do you need more space, better light or an easier connection between rooms? A list of specific frustrations is often more useful than a folder of beautiful photographs.
Separate the essentials from the wishes
Agree on what the project must achieve and what would be nice to include. This makes design and budget conversations more productive when choices are needed.
Talk about the whole budget
Construction is only part of the picture. Ask your team about design, approvals, surveys, contingency and temporary accommodation where relevant.
Bring questions, not a finished brief
You do not need every answer before approaching a designer. A good first conversation helps identify the questions worth exploring.
